Are Your Blood Sugar Levels Too High?
Type 2 diabetes is a health condition that mainly affects your blood sugar. If you have this condition, chances are you can have multiple complications as a result of high blood sugar levels (BSL). According to the American Diabetes Association, a high blood sugar reading, or hyperglycemia, is considered to be the major risk factor for the development of multi-organ complications in diabetes. If you have Type 2 diabetes, it is best to always keep your BSL within the normal limits.
Many diabetic patients ask their doctor: “How high is too high?”
According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, a blood sugar value of 180 mg/dL (10 mmol/L) or more may be considered too high. If you have a level this high it means you do not have enough insulin in your body to control the level of sugar in your blood – often as a result of the food you have eaten.
Suggested Blood Sugar Levels:
- fasting blood sugar… 70 to 100 mg/dL (or less than 5.5 mmol/L)
- 2 hours after eating… 70 to 145 dL (or less than 7.9 mmol/L)
- random BSL… 70 to 125 mg/dL (or less than 7 mmol/L)
What are the possible causes of high blood sugar levels?
1. Not taking the recommended diabetic medications is one of the most common causes of high and uncontrolled levels of blood sugar in Type 2 diabetics. Let’s face it; almost all diabetics miss their medications from time to time. To prevent this from happening, it is best to set your cell phone or your alarm clock and let it remind you to take your medications at the prescribed time. Also, be sure to let your family or the people you live with, and your close friends at work, know when you should take your medication. This way, there will be somebody to give you a friendly reminder just in case you forget.
2. Not controlling what you eat. Being on an anti-diabetic medication does not mean you can eat what you want when you want – and your medications will take care of the rest. According to the National Diabetes Information Clearinghouse, eating too much food is considered to be one of the major culprits where hyperglycemia is concerned. And of course, consuming too many carbs is another factor. As well as watching the caloric content, you still need to watch the carbohydrate content of your food whether you take medications or not.
3. Sedentary lifestyle. Your skeletal muscles are the primary burners of energy in your body. Leading a sedentary lifestyle causes the sugar in your blood to be left unused and floating around in your bloodstream, hence your high BSL’s.
When your levels are high all the time, your blood sugar is out of control and you need to see your doctor right away and adjust both your medication and diet.

Other causes of high blood sugar include:
hundreds of medications and herbs cause either hyperglycemia or hypoglycemia. Always make sure you mention to the doctor who is handling your Type 2 diabetes, any medications or supplements you are taking.
stress and infections can also affect these levels.
higher after exercise: the adrenaline your body makes during exercise causes your sugar to rise. Usually this is temporary, and overall exercise lowers your blood sugar.
