A New Vaccine For Herpes Sufferers

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases and the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline are working together to develop a vaccine for genital herpes, whilst BioVex, a biotechnology company, has actually designed a new ImmunoVex HSV2 vaccine.

The vaccine is based on a live but weakened form of HSV2 that has been engineered to eradicate the four genes that enables the virus to hide from the immune system. The aim is that the vaccine will allow the body to generate an immune response capable of preventing infection.

BioVex researchers found that animals that had been injected with the vaccine did not go on to develop symptoms of HSV2. Clinical trials will now take place in London
